I'm an eclectic minimalistic hippie, with some yuppie tendencies. I'm married, poly, and bi. I'm mostly a homey, somewhat shy/reserved person, loving my quiet simple life... with extroverted, endurant and world traveler streaks.

I’ve always had a thing for the domestic arts, and now they’re my main gig. This is especially fun for my organization & efficiency fetish (which for some reason does not necessarily translate into my being organized and efficient).

Getting back into visual arts (especially painting) is part of the plan, though for some reason I’m resistant to moving forward with that. Craft work happens slightly more often, the downside there is that I am, more or less depending on the medium, a beginner as far as that’s concerned. But I’m somewhat obsessed with fabric, doing some hand sewing, etc. Knitting is one of my few interests that stays put as a small hobby. I’m also into home chemistry, everything from alternative body care materials (ie, honey) to homemade house cleansers to whatever I can learn about essential oils.

In school I studied religion and Gandhi’s political philosophy, which indirectly led me to working in sustainable agriculture (biointensive), and getting involved in localization, until I moved to Vancouver so that I could live with my now-husband. It was worth it, but I really miss the dirt. My ideal would be to live and work in an intentional community that is more or less focused on sustainable agriculture and handicrafts, with a reasonable balance of creature comforts.

I'm a bit skeptical of okcupid, because as neat as it is, don't those deep connections often get formed unexpectedly, with people one wouldn't have thought...? In the meantime, why not...

Nowadays I read a lot of nonfiction books from the library. In between I reread Maigret detective novels by George Simenon, and occasionally read or reread fantasy-scifi novels, especially Gene Wolfe and JRR Tolkein, and I've been wanting to re/read some Ursula K Leguin. I keep my eyes open for good literary novels with happy endings (do they even exist?), and for interesting biographies, most recently that of Edna St Vincent Millay.

 Authors I've loved and/or identified with in the not-too-distant-past: Doris Lessing, MK Gandhi, Will Durant, Anais Nin, Charles Bukowski, Dorothy Maclean of the Findhorn Community. I like many many movies. I love old classic romantic comedies, like any with the Katherine Hepburn/Jimmy Stewart/Cary Grant crowd, also especially Preston Sturges’ movies, and The Thin Man movies. I am a sucker for bumbling secret agent movies like Inspector Clouseau and The Man Who Knew Too Little (because they remind me of myself--not that I'm clumsy, but I can be dopey and inept.) Of course, good fantasy movies like The Lord of the Rings and in most respects The Golden Compass. Movies I have especially liked include The Labyrinth, The Hunger, eXistenZ, Howl's Moving Castle, The Ninth Gate (mostly), La Fille Sur Le Pont. We also have a collection of Hindi film dvds that we actually never watch.



In terms of the music I listen to the most, there's quiet classical Indian and Western music and ambient; some classical guitar and lute, Bach, Mendelsshon, Anonymous 4, Chaurasia, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Mice Parade, Brian Eno, João Gilberto, Redhooker, Amina, some great obscure world music... Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Iron & Wine, Louis Armstrong, Beatles, Miles Davis (ascenceur pour l'echafaud and sketches of spain), Django Rhinehart, Beirut, Magnetic Fields, PJ Harvey, Suzanne Vega, Joan Osbourne, Kris Delmhurst, Ani Difranco, Leonard Cohen, more great obscure world music, etc. It’s not precisely music, but I often listen to Abraham-Hicks workshop recordings during the day.

Nowadays I am an omnivore but my basic diet is still vegetarian; we love lentils and beans. I enjoy cooking, but it’s not normally a great passion, I still have the New Yorker tendency to eat out all the time. I have to cook frequently, though, for health reasons. I’m generally into the Mediterranean-Middle Eastern-Indian spectrum, especially Middle Eastern since my husband is Bosnian and the food is similar. I want to get comfortable with improvising wildly with spices, and to really get comfortable with cooking virtually all our food all the time.

I'm most often at home watching a rented movie, on the computer, reading a book, and/or thinking. I am also often visiting friends in our great neighborhood, occasionally hanging out in local spots, playing games like darts or foozball. I always mean to go to the local live music spot yet I never do. I like to go for evening walks around small local parks and have very serious conversations.
